Your Child’s First Visit

Hi! I’m Dr. Laura Mitchell at Frisco Mini Molars, and today I want to talk to you about your child’s first visit to our office.

One thing we tried very hard to do at Frisco Mini Molars is create a bright, cheerful environment starting with our kid-friendly waiting room. When it’s time for your child’s exam, we’ll invite them back and show them around the office on the way to their exam chair.

From there, we explain everything we’re doing using a system called “Tell – Show – Do.” That means we tell them what we’re about to do during their exam and show them all of our fun tools and equipment, all before even getting started with the exam. We know dentist offices can be kind of scary for a child at such a young age, so this is all in an effort to make them comfortable with the process, ultimately easing them into the exam and cleaning!

We love showing all of our instruments because we have SO MANY! I have a mouth mirror that helps me see their teeth, in addition to a little explorer tool that I call my “tooth counter” for when I’m checking for cavities. We also use a scaler tool that allows us to scrape off plaque, a process I call “cleaning off the dirties” … just using vernacular that your child can understand!

When the initial cleaning and exam process is complete, we’ll use a toothbrush to polish your child’s teeth and apply fluoride treatment. We’ll send a new and fresh toothbrush home with your child after their appointment.

When we do our exam with the assistance of my hygienist, we’ll do a few special things (like turning on our bubble machine) that will help create a fun and relaxing atmosphere. We do everything we can to make it a comfortable experience for your child!

If you have any questions or if there is anything we can do for you (especially if you’re looking for a dentist for your child), please give us a call! We’d love to get you on our schedule and help any way we can!
